What custom instructions do
You tell the system how you want the AI to behave: for example, more formal or casual, shorter or longer replies, or to assume certain context (e.g. your role, language). The model then applies those instructions across your chats so you do not have to repeat yourself every time. It is like giving the AI a stable "personality" or set of rules for your sessions.
How to set them in Get4oBack
In Get4oBack you can set your instructions in account or chat settings (check the app for the exact location). Enter the tone, style, or context you want. The AI will use that when replying. You can change or clear them anytime. Combined with the GPT-4o base tone, this lets you fine-tune the experience without leaving the chat.
Example instructions
You might say: "Reply in a casual, concise way" or "Assume I am a developer; use technical terms when helpful" or "Keep answers under 150 words unless I ask for more." You can add context like your role, language, or how you use the chat (e.g. writing, coding, research). The model applies this across conversations so you do not repeat the same preferences in every thread. Start simple and refine as you go.
When to update instructions
You can change or clear your instructions anytime. If you switch from work to personal use, update them to match (e.g. more formal for work, more casual at home). If the AI is not following your preferences well, try rephrasing or being more specific. Instructions are stored per account and apply to new chats; they do not rewrite past messages. On Plus and Pro, cross-chat memory can work together with custom instructions so the model keeps both your stated preferences and relevant context from other conversations.
Clearing or resetting instructions
To go back to the default behavior, clear your custom instructions in account or chat settings. Leave the field empty and save. New chats will no longer use the old preferences. Past chats are unchanged - only future replies follow the new (or default) behavior. If you want a one-off different tone for a single chat, you can state it in the first message instead of changing global instructions. Resetting is instant and reversible; you can type new instructions anytime.
